Educating Psychologists on how to use Film/Video-Based Therapy and Virtual Reality in their Practice to Treat Trauma in patients
VIRTUAL REALITY, FILMMAKING & DIGITAL STORYTELLING
What happens when filmmaking, virtual reality, storytelling, and psychology come together?
Film/Video-Based Therapy® grew from the idea that creating media—not simply watching it—can become part of a larger process of storytelling, reflection, resilience, and personal growth. The field draws from areas including cinema therapy, expressive arts, narrative approaches, digital storytelling, phototherapy, media psychology, and emerging technologies such as virtual reality.
Dr. Joshua Lee Cohen has spent more than two decades exploring these intersections through research, writing, teaching, and practice. His work includes three Routledge books examining video and filmmaking as psychotherapy, trauma, and post-traumatic growth, as well as participation in peer-reviewed research involving video narrative.
But knowing that these approaches exist raises more questions than it answers.
Where is the line between filmmaking and therapy?
Can filmmakers, coaches, educators, peer specialists, and other non-clinicians use storytelling without practicing psychotherapy?
How might VR and digital storytelling be incorporated responsibly?
When should a licensed mental health professional become involved?
How can you develop a storytelling project that is engaging, ethical, and appropriate for the people you serve?
Those are exactly the kinds of questions we explore through Your Digital Storytelling Project coaching and our Skool community.
Rather than trying to turn filmmakers into therapists—or therapists into filmmakers—the goal is to help people understand how their existing skills can fit responsibly into the growing intersection of storytelling, technology, mental health, and human resilience.
Whether you are a therapist, filmmaker, social worker, educator, peer specialist, researcher, creative professional, or simply exploring an idea, you don’t have to figure out the technology, terminology, and boundaries by yourself.
